Is Questioning God Through Divine Dialogue Wrong?
Today we review the scene in the book of Genesis 18:16-23. Often, we are taught that questioning God is wrong. It is perceived as a lack of faith or an act of disobedience. That is a lie from the pit of hell!
However, the Bible reveals a different perspective. Many of the most profound revelations occurred because someone dared to question God. This indicates that questioning God, when done with the right heart and intention, can lead to deeper understanding and stronger faith.
The Struggle in Asking the Wrong Questions
One of the main issues is not that we question God, but that we often ask the wrong questions. For example, asking God, "Why me?" in times of hardship focuses on self-pity and despair, while asking "God, why not me?" shifts our perspective towards understanding and embracing God's purpose in our trials. This shift from a self-centered to a God-centered inquiry aligns us with His will and opens us to His promises and lessons. When we ask God the wrong questions, we cannot expect the right answers.
This misalignment can lead to confusion and frustration in our spiritual journey. Aligning our questions with God's will is crucial for receiving meaningful answers. By seeking to understand His purpose rather than demanding explanations, we place ourselves in a position to receive divine wisdom and guidance that brings clarity and peace. This alignment transforms our relationship with God, turning our doubts and struggles into opportunities for growth and deeper faith.
My Experience With Asking the Right Questions
Some time ago, I asked God three pivotal questions which aligned with His will, and the revelations that followed were life-changing. Here are the questions I asked:
“Who did you create me to be?”
“What is it from Your Word did you create me to see?”
“Am I really disabled because I have a lifelong struggle with impulsiveness?”
These questions were rooted in a desire to understand my purpose, my perception, and my struggles from God's perspective. The answers I received brought clarity and peace. Through this process, I discovered my unique identity in Christ, gained deeper insights from Scripture that were meant specifically for me, and found a new perspective on my impulsiveness—not as a disability but as a trait that, when guided by the Holy Spirit, could be channeled for God's glory. This experience underscored the importance of aligning our inquiries with God's will, opening the door to profound and transformative revelations.
The Power of Asking the Right Questions
Asking God the right question can have life-saving implications. In Genesis 18:16-23, Abraham's questioning led to the salvation of Lot's life. Similarly, Moses asked God a profound question in Exodus 3:13-14, which led to the revelation of God's name, Yahweh. This question shaped the foundation of faith for generations to come. Without the disciples asking Jesus about the end times (Matthew 24), we wouldn't have the detailed revelation about His return. These instances show that the right questions can lead to significant divine answers.
Moreover, the Bible is filled with instances where individuals received life-altering revelations simply by asking the right questions. For example, Solomon asked God for wisdom to govern His people (1 Kings 3:9), and God granted him unparalleled wisdom and understanding, along with wealth and honor.
In the New Testament, when Paul asked, "Who are you, Lord?" on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:5), his encounter with Jesus transformed him from a persecutor of Christians into one of the greatest apostles. These examples illustrate that when we seek God with sincere and purposeful questions, He responds with answers that can change the course of our lives and the lives of those around us.
Private Answers with Public Blessings
A private answer from God can hold public blessings that extend beyond one's lifetime. For example, in John 3:9-18, Nicodemus's private conversation with Jesus led to the revelation of God's plan for salvation. This plan has blessed countless individuals throughout history. When we seek God's answers, we often find that they impact not only our lives but also the lives of many others.
Asking divine questions obligates us to walk out the divine answers we receive. Aligning our questions with God's will is a way of communing with Him. It reflects our desire to understand and fulfill His purpose for our lives. When we ask God questions that align with His will, we open ourselves to divine guidance and direction.
When God Asks Us Questions
Interestingly, the issue isn't always about us questioning God; it's also about when God questions us. When God asks us a question, it often indicates that something is wrong. In Job 38:1-4, God's response to Job's complaints comes in the form of questions, highlighting Job's limited understanding compared to God's infinite wisdom. Similarly, in Matthew 21:23-27, Jesus questions the religious leaders, exposing their insincerity and lack of understanding. These instances remind us that when God questions us, it is an opportunity for self-reflection and growth.
